Recommended Trees

The Coeur d’Alene Urban Forestry Committee has updated the Approved Street Tree List of trees that are suitable for planting along streets or the right-of-way. The trees on this list are hardy for this area and have good street-side habits (i.e., do not have intrusive roots, are not overly messy, and can be pruned up for sidewalk and street clearance). There are trees, including many native evergreens, that are not included on this list that can be planted in areas other than streets and rights-of- ways.

A tree permit is required before a tree can be planted in a public right-of-way.

We encourage tree diversity for both aesthetic and health reasons. Medium-sized trees are to be used in most street-side locations. Trees appropriate for planting in swales are marked with (SW).
