In 2011, Coeur d'Alene received the Dog Town USA Award from Dog Fancy Magazine, the world's most widely read dog magazine.  To apply, an application was submitted with information on area shelter statistics, dog-friendly businesses, dog-related events, and dog-friendly locations such as Central Bark Dog Park.  No single person, organization, or law protecting animals can make a city dog-friendly; it takes ongoing effort and dedication from many people to be named Dog Town USA.  Along with the award and feature in Dog Fancy Magazine, the Kootenai County Dog Park Association received a check for $5,000, which, combined with community donations, made this second off-leash dog park a reality.
