Hiring FAQ
Does CDAFD have a current residency restriction?
No, anyone can apply.
Once I have my EMT, is there anything else I need to do with it?
Make sure you are registered at both the state AND national level.
How can I make myself a more appealing candidate?
Any experience and education you have with the fire service is helpful. If you are in an area that has a volunteer program, try that out. This is a great chance to find out if the fire service is really for you. Often, a volunteer agency will also help you to get further fire service education. Any training and certifications you can bring to a department is highly valuable. Fire Fighter I Certificate would be helpful. Another way to make yourself a more appealing candidate is to get your name and face into a department. CDAFD has a wonderful ride a long program where you can see what the department does and get to know some of the men and women who provide those services.
Do I need to have previous Fire/EMS experience to apply?
No, although any prior experience is great to have; all new firefighters go through a CDAFD hosted fire academy. You do have to have your EMT (or in the process of getting your EMT) to apply.
Do I need a drivers license to apply?
Yes, all applicants must have a valid driver’s license.
How do I find out when the next written test is?
You will need to keep checking the city website for current openings.
Can I study for the written exam?
Yes. Most local book stores carry civil service exam preparation books. Many of these are even directed towards firefighters.
How do I know where I ranked on the selection list?
After all of the application process is complete, you will receive a letter in the mail notifying you of where you placed on the list.
How many candidates are interviewed for a position?
CDAFD works in agreement with a civil service committee to establish what is known as the 'Rule of Three.' If one position is open, CDAFD will interview the top three candidates on the list. If two positions are open they will interview the top six on the list, and so on and so forth.
